The Twin Tragedy An Online Memorial to the Afghan Civilians killed by US Bombing after September 11th
The terrorist attacks on the US on September 11th 2001 left approximately 3,250 people dead. This tragedy has been commemorated by physical and online memorials, with a permanent memorial planned at the site of the twin towers. Families of the deceased are supported and will receive compensation. However a parallel tragedy of similar proportions has been largely unmarked - that of the Afghan civilians who died in the US bombing following Septermber 11th. This site is an online memorial to those people. Estimates of the civilian deaths in Afghanistan as a direct result of US bombing range from 1,000 (Carl Conetta, Project on Defense Alternatives, Commonwealth Institute) to 4,000 (Professor Marc Herold, University of New Hampshire). Information on sources The civilian dead in Afghanistan can also be seen as victims of September 11th - a twin tragedy. The purpose of this site is to create an online memorial as a gesture of love and support to the families of the deceased. The eventual aim is to list every person killed, with details of their lives, the circumstances of their deaths, and the authentication for their inclusion. This may take many years to complete, and we cannot anticipate the final number of authenticated victims of the bombing. More important will be the opportunity for families of the victims to create tributes to the loved ones they have lost. Your help is needed Please help us in collecting information and photos from the families of the dead and from any reliable sources that would stand as authentication. This is also an invitation to anyone already engaged in creating such a memorial to pool resources or contribute. How to help |
