The Twin Tragedy

Information on Sources

Estimates of the deaths in the US on September 11th have been the subject of continual revision by the authorities as the various agencies piece together the data, and stands at 3,234 (as of December 10th 2001).

Estimates of the civilian deaths in Afghanistan as a direct result of US bombing are much harder to confirm, but Marc Herold, a US economics professor at the University of New Hampshire, estimates that at least 3,767 civilians were killed by US bombs between October 7 and December 10. Herold bases his figures on corroborated reports from aid agencies, the UN, eyewitnesses, TV stations, newspapers and news agencies around the world. Visit his site.

Professor Herold also includes an appendix in which he lists the raids on a day to day basis starting on 7th October 2001. Visit the appendix.

More conservative figures are put forward by The Commonwealth Institute's 'Project on Defense Alternative', suggesting civilian deaths between 1,000 and 1,300. Even so the document recognises and attempts to analyse the reasons for the high civilian casualty rates. Visit this site.

Please help by coming forward with information. We are aiming for the highest standards of corroboration, though we also recognise that the true picture may take many years to emerge. How to help
